Hot water tanks are used to heat water in a pressure vessel where higher flow rates are required for limited periods, and can withstand a hydro static pressure close to that of the main incoming supply. These hot water tanks may also incorporate an electrical resistance heater, an air source heat pump, a gas, or oil burner that heats the water directly.

Indirect-fired water heaters are usually connected to a hot water space heating boiler, and normally DHW cylinders are heated indirectly by primary water from the boiler, or even by an electric immersion heater which is often used as a backup to the boiler.
